Axis is a line that is established by two points in a particular space or volume. Along this axis, forms and spaces are arranged in a symmetrical or asymmetrical manner. The axis of a structure or composition is invisible to the eye, but it is a very powerful line that implies both symmetry and balance. Since an axis is linear, it has both length and direction and implies movement and views along its path.

Symmetry is the balanced arrangement of similar forms and spaces on opposite sides of the axis or dividing line. Symmetry is broken down into two different categories: symmetrical and asymmetrical. The last image above represents symmetrical balance. This is when the same objects are balanced along an axis. Asymmetrical is when objects are not balanced along an axis.

Hierarchy is the representation of the importance or significance of an object or form in relation to the forms around it. The more important shape or form is normally represented by a change in its size, shape, placement or color compared to the other forms. This shape is usually bigger, placed in the middle or is rotated compared to the other shapes in order to show its dominance and to help it stand out from the rest. The hierarchy of the shape can even be a different shape as the rest of the other forms.

Rhythm is the movement and repetitive arrangement of forms in a unifying, similar manner. Rhythm establishes the notion of repetition and movement in order to organize forms and spaces. The movement that rhythm creates can be either from our eyes as we follow shapes and elements in a composition or it can be as our bodies advance through a sequence of spaces, such as along a pathway.

Repetition is the arrangement of similar shapes or forms in a composition or architecture. These forms are usually grouped according to their closeness to one another and by their visual characteristics that each of them share. Shapes don't need to be exactly the same to share a repetitive arrangement. They may share a common trait, which allows each form to be individually unique, but also belonging to the same family. In the image above, the repetition of the linear, vertical lines creates the same negative shapes in between them.

When I think about transformation, I automatically think about the movie "Transformers" because this movie truly describes the definition for transformation. Transformation is when a form, structure or organization can be altered or changed using a series of manipulations without losing its overall, original concept or identity. The diagram above shows how a cross can be altered or transformed in order to create a variety of different shapes, without losing the concept that it started off as a cross. The image above shows how a sofa transforms into a bunk bed.

Datum is when a line, plane, or volume gathers, measures and organizes a pattern of shapes and spaces. In order to measure and organize the shapes and spaces, the line, plane or volume using regularity and continuity in order to create a particular arrangement, organization and composition.
